piston / ring orientation

Various manufacturers give different isntructions for placement of the 
gaps, and some give no instructions at all. It is generally accepted that 
the gaps should not line up. Total Seal recommends the following, whether 
you use conventional rings or their gapless rings:

Top ring -- gap on the side of the manifolds
Second ring -- gap on the side of the sparkplugs
Third ring, assuming that it is a ring with upper and lower rails -- top 
oil ring gap over one end of the piston pin, bottom oil ring gap over the 
other end of the piston pin

This satisfies everything everybody has said about thrust side, etc
