Hi Scott
Which part is it you are having trouble with and on which car?
If it is the manifold joint to the down pipe then on the single pipe systems
Herald Spit (early models) big saloons I have found it best to assemble
without the triangular copper gasket as these tend to blow out and leak,
just apply a bead of assembly paste to the flange having made sure the
spigot that sticks through the flange doesn't bottom before the flanges
meet. On the dual pipe manifold joint (later spit including 1500) I have
found that the manufacturing process leaves the flange bowed and the
solution to this is to line file the joker flat, then bolt together without
a gasket. If it is the sleeve joints that you have trouble with the trick is
to move all the bits about until all the slots finish over the tube that
fits inside. I have found some of the poorer after market systems do not
have enough length of pipe to allow this eventuality so I have in the past
welded the slots up a bit, (I sent one system back as I had a spare car and
the time to indulge in the lengthy process of arguing the point). The
easiest way to weld up the slots is to slide an aluminium tube inside to
support the weld which will not stick to the ally and means you don't have
to file the inside clean! Once you have all the tubes which fit inside
positioned so they pass the ends of the slots, Mark them, remove them then
apply a liberal coating of assembly paste then re-fit to the marks. I try to
have the clamps positioned in such a way that they give maximum clearance to
the body / chassis / road whilst still acting to close the slots together, a
compromise on clearance and clamping!

Graham.
