Hmm.  My wife's veggie garden has occasionally been bothered by 
groundhogs.  Trapping them or plugging or gassing their holes is only 
a temporary fix, since one groundhog usually means many and a hole 
can be re-routed easily.  However we did find a fix that seems to 
work and may work for you.  At your local Agway or other agricultural 
supplies store (or by mailorder) you can buy a small container of fox 
(or other predatory animal) urine.  Dispense this stuff on cotton 
balls arrayed on the perimeter of your space or in your garage.  I 
don't know how well it will work on raccoons but it does seem to keep 
the groundhogs out of the lettuce!
