I've had similar non-LBC experiences -- most notably removing the starter on 
a Dodge pickup and the fuel pump on a VW bus. In fact, the first instruction 
in the VW factory manual to remove the fuel pump was "1. Remove engine."
One suggestion: for American cars it frequently helps to check out the 
Alldata manual. This is usually available online at your public library. 
Another 
suggestion: remove the transmission cooler lines.
