Early OD

OK, you TR gurus...perhaps you can help me out.
I'm redoing an OD tranny (and engine)that I picked up in a New Hampshire bone 
yard last year and I have a question.

I removed the rear casting per Nelson Riedels excellent treatise and noticed a 
lot of ground metal in the annulus rim. A further inspection showed evidence of 
galling on the face behind the gear. Has anyone experienced this before? Could 
someone have left out a spacer or is it just thrust washer wear?
