That's actually standard in most places in the US ... the ambulance services are
mostly private, for-profit companies.  Generally the cost is covered by
insurance, but not always.  You'll also likely be charged for any medical care
administered during the ride.  ISTR the medical care (which consisted of someone
riding along in case there was a problem) cost almost as much as the ambulance
when they moved my late wife from hospital to hospital.

All of which you should have known *before* you bought into your exclusive,
guarded, gated community.

Before Prop 13 passed in California, I knew people whose prop tax payment was
bigger than their house payment !  Of course, it's a little hard to feel sorry
for people who paid $60k for a home worth $3Mil today.
