That was a common modification to the works rally and road race TRs, an
exhaust vent to let heat out of the engine compartment. It was used as early as
the
special-build TRS, I believe.
Revington TR sells a kit modeled closely on the setup in the factory rally
TR4s Neil owns (or owned). www.revingtontr.com Go to the TR4 section and type
in
"fender vent" to see a picture of the kit.
I recall seeing a TR4 rally replica owned by someone in Germany, which also
has the vents installed. Do some Googling for Triumph rally cars. There are
lots of photos of TR4s with the vents out there on the Internet. Seems to me
not
as many TR250/5/6 saw that modification done, but then I haven't really been
looking.
Personally, I've always thought the triangular shaped vents looked a little
odd. It is obviously just following the stamping in the inner fender, just
behind the wheel well.
I'm adding vents to my TR4, but haven't done so yet (body work is still some
months off) and I won't be following the factory method. Instead, I'll place
the vents farther up and back, and will either have 6 or 8 small louvers
stamped in the fenders or will install internal louvers behind a simple
rectangular
opening. Just a day or two ago I saw a Cobra replica that had vents similar to
the latter style.

In the past I have seen several pictures of TR4~6 cars with a custom vent
cut into both front fenders. It was sort of triangular in shape and was just
behind the front wheel opening and just below the S/S horizontal trim. There
appears to be an "egg crate" grill installed so that it looks like it came
from the factory.
