Ron, I wouldn't bother fabricating anything, just slide a suitable stack of
1/2" drive sockets over the stud and spin a head nut down on them.  It only
takes two retainers.

If you don't turn the crank with the head off, or are planning on removing
the liners anyway, then there's no need for retainers.
