Probably, but what slot are you talking about ?  If it's the slot for the
drive dog, then the first thing to do is find true TDC (which you can do
close enough by pulling the #1 sparkplug and looking down the hole with a
light).  Then check that the hole in the pulley lines up (pretty close,
doesn't need to be exact at this point).  If not, then either the pulley is
assembled wrong (common mistake) or possibly the key is missing.

If that's OK, then you need to change the engagement of the distributor
drive gear with the camshaft.  See page B24 in the factory workshop manual
for instructions (page 108 of the Bentley).
