I'm with your mechanic on that one ... doesn't matter enough to worry about.

One new lifter is no problem.  But if it isn't hard enough, there's a good
chance you are going to have to tear the engine down again sooner rather
than later, to replace both the lifter and the camshaft.  Still, there's
also a chance it will be OK, and an even better chance that the lifter is
hard enough even though you didn't test it; so I certainly wouldn't tear it
down again until you start seeing symptoms of a failed lifter ('sparklies'
in the oil, one valve always too loose, etc.)

None of the above problems is going to keep it from running.  If the lifter
is bad, it won't run as well after the lifter starts to fail, but even on 3
cylinders it will still run.

Randall - who's driven home on 3 at least once, less on a LGC (little German
car).
