Just a guess but since the current to the starter doesn't normally pass 
thru the ammeter I'd say you have a bad battery cable or connection. The 
starter is drawing a huge amount of power and the path thru the ammeter 
is easier than thru the battery cable. Just cleaning all the battery 
cable connections, including grounds, may take care of it.
