Sometimes, rapping the cylinder on the (wooden) bench will coax it out.
Another trick that sometimes works is to spray some lubricant (penetrating
oil or whatever) into the area, then use a rod to press the piston all the
way in and let it spring out.

I've also on occasion resorted to using a hone to clean and slightly open
the bore at the end, around the circlip groove.
