My Series 5 is fitted with a voltmeter and I assumed it was factory fitted as most British manufacturers started to fit them when alternators replaced dynamos as I recall.Maybe Rootes kept them longe

Yes, voltmeters and alternators go hand in hand. Maybe it is historic (producing costs of ammeters?) or the nature of generator/alternator and their behavior when measuring either voltage or amperes.
