Greg and Steven, Check out the Toyota Solara conv. Have a 2000 coupe 4 cyl and it has been a great car! 30 mpg too! Not real crazy about the newer ones but I think the earlier ones are very attractiv

Michael's suggest would work I guess. I would use a ordinary floor jack under the diff. By pulling/pushing/turning the jack in conjunction with the steering wheel the car can be moved most anywhere

The tube you refer to vents the sump to the valve cover. This is fine if vented to the carbs. If the hose to the carb is plugged then you have a closed system and pressure can build up from the heat

Seems to me that you are going the wrong way so to speak. With too much shim you will get the axle nut tight but the wheel will still spin and be loose. The amount of shim typically is around 0.030
