Texaco has sent me an advert for a device called "Auto Starter". It is described as being a sealed 14.5v alkaline battery with 5 amps "of recharge power to start your vehicle". The thing plugs into t

Bob, It can't. They won't. I have seen these things advertised, and I assumed they were meant to give your car battery a quick charge so you could use it for starting. Even at that, I am more than a

I'd like to add to my earlier comments. The claim that the 14.5V battery has "5 amps" is irrelevent and inaccurate. Amps are a measure of current, and depend on the load. A two-volt battery can prov

Along the same lines, I've seen jumper cables advertised that supposedly plug into the cigarette lighters of both cars, so you don't open the hood and get dirty. Anybody know anything about these? -N

Nory, Typically, the underdash wires to the cigarette lighter are rated at 15 amp maximum, often less. In a typical LBC, they are rated at 8 amp. I don't know the exact amount of current drawn by a s

Something cool I saw while browsing through "Orlie's Lowrider" magazine: a guy made a gasoline powered battery charger. He took a small gas lawn edger and mounted an automobile alternator in place of

Probably not a big problem of liability, since on most cars, all of the circuits besides the starter are disabled while the starter is actually cranking. (A/C, lights, radio, cigar lighter, etc.) Th

I haven't seen these miracle jumper cables. I have used a tricle charger that plugs into my cigarette lighter for battery maintenance, and that works fine, but as Dan points out, this is low amperage

Chris, You are absolutely right. However, 30 amps through a 15 amp wire doesn't take too long to over heat, and would probably zap a 8 amp wire pretty quickly. While you and I, and the others on this

(speaking of using jumper cables through the cigarette lighter socket to jump start a car) You are correct in that "most" cars are wired this way. Unfortunately for the unwary, the later MGs are not.

Actually, if you connect red to positive on BOTH cars, it doesn't matter whether they're both positive ground, both negative ground, or one of each. Just don't allow the cars to touch! :) Scott
