Plugging up the PVC valve is lack of maintainance, not neccesarily due to extending oil change intervals. Sludge is something that probably happened during the change over to lead free petrol. Never

My father (a pilot who flew from 1944 to 1980, type-rated in 41 different aircraft) told me that with the radial motors they typically never flushed the motor and didn't change oil between overhauls.

That may only be so on some modern cars, but not all. Plenty of EU and Japanese cars that have a system that can be cleaned out, however sometimes you do have to take some trouble to find out how tho
