The problem sounds like a pressure problem. Not enough pressure being developed to engage the overdrive. But before you begin, make sure that valve setting lever moves so that the hole in the lever

Before going any further double check the solenoid and make sure that when the switch clicks, that the solenoid is activating to the correct length. That's usually the problem with what you describe

The OD uses the 35 amp fuse in the fuse box. If its blown , other stuff won't work either. Jess, do you have a shop manual? You should get one, it has all this info in there. Alan -- Alan '52 A90 '53

Hi Alan, If the BN1 is like later models, the OD isn't fused at all. The white wires at the fuse block are upstream of the fuse itself. Power coming from the brown wire via the ignition switch. --Ori

Carl, turning the dash switch off will not by itself turn off the power to the overdrive solenoid. If the throttle switch is set up correctly, once you power the overdrive solenoid it will stay power
