I've rebuilt a number of engines over the years, including a 948. BUT... I'm about to replace the timing gears & chain on one of mine & I see the cam gear comes with rubber "tensioner rings." I don't

I had one of those on my Austin A35 948 motor. I swapped out all the timing gear for a double row 1275 set including the harmonic balancer. I never did figure out what puppose the rubber served. I s

The rubber rings were/are a tensioner, just kind of snugging things up a bit. The replacement sprockets do not have provision for them. One could argue their efficacy, and many folks removed them fro

The story is forget em on the Bugeye 948. Not a problem. I have had three now including a newish one and I have never seen those rings installed as there is no place to do so. _______________________

I never could figure out how those were supposed to function. Guess the rubber "grew" as RPMs increased thereby causing some mystical tensioning of the chain?? The 1275 dbl. row chain/sprockets/harmo

I think the chain edges would actually ride on the rubber and be pushed slightly above the trough at the bottom of each tooth of the sprocket providing some tensioning and noise dampening. Of course,

Hi Norm, When mounted in the original single chain timing gear, it was supposed to put tension on the chain to make it run tighter. It did that likely for 2 months and then that rubber turned into an
