I notice that both Vizard and Des Hammil recommend strapping the center main bearing cap on an A-series engine. No one says anything about the other two. Is it desirable to strap either of the other

The centre main has a harder life than the end bearings so generally it's only the centre main that gets the reinforcing strap. I have however, seen a photo of an A-series engine with all 3 bearing

When replacing the center main, wheather it be a 2 or 4 bolt, you will have to have the mains align bored and the trust washer area also trued up and because the new center main is VERY hard material

Yeah, I know. That's what we use (or similar) for strapping the center main on race motors. Mill the center cap flat, etc. and bolt the strap on top of it. That's just the strap for a cap not a h/d 2

I'll bet you have a pillar drill and haven't seen any of my metalworking skills... Supplmentary question - can Cobalt drill bits be sharpened much the same a regular drill bits? Regards Daniel1312 __

Yes, Cobalt, HSS, whatever, all succumb to the grinding wheel. A Drill Doctor will make them all sharp. English:American translation: "Pillar drill" is what we yanks call "drill press", I think. ____
