I think you've misread the manual, Guy. The measurement should be taken between the thrust washer and the crankshaft thrust surface. Since the washers sit in a notch in the cap (otherwise they would

Hi Guy If the engine is in the car, the clutch pedal can be used to push the crank forwards, if out of the car use a lever on the flywheel or front pulley to move the crank to one extreme. Graham. ==
