I have a '53 3100. Someone has obviously already "tweaked" the bed because I have only 4 boards, but there are bolts (not the metal strips) for 8. I recently put a hole in it carrying a F@#d engine.

You can install 2 X 6 's but will have to deal with the following: 1. Bed side angle strips will have to be removed and moved up to compensate for the thicker board "unless you grove the edge of this

Another option to consider if you are not concerned about originality. Get a sheet of diamond pattern steel plate the same size as the bed. Drill and bolt without the bed strips. Makes for a very nic
