A little history on the 400 BB. The 396 debuted in mid 1965, and was run through the 1969 model year. In 1970, it was still billed as a 396, but was actually bored .030 bigger at the factory to 402.

I believe you're correct, there was a 396 and later they were 402's, then 454's, and also the infamous 427 L88 etc, but the 400 was a Siamese bore small block. "Nothin lasts forever except old Fords

I can't speak specifically to a 72 C20, (I have a '72 C10 with a 350) but I've seen cars of that era that said 400 on the fendors, and had a big block under the hood. My brother once had an early 70s
