I'm restoring my '56 1/2 ton and I'm at the oil bath air filter assembly. There appears to be no way to open the assembly to get at the filter stuff inside. My guess is that there is plenty of gunk,

They don't open regularly. Don't know if you could get open OK, but then not sure you could get the mesh stuff anywhere either. My vote, soak it good and shake and soak somemore in Mineral Spirits or

Do you have big enough holes in it to pull the stuff out, even in pieces. If so, then you can pull all of the stuff out that way. I have done this on some of my projects and then bought scouring pads
