What size tires do you have? I have 235-85R16, about 32 inches tall, on my '58 half ton, and I cruise at 65 fine with my 283, heavy duty 4 speed, and 3.90 rear end. I used to have 15" wheels and upgr

I haven't heard of those gears for our trucks; my flyer shows 3.70 as an option for '58, with the 3.90 as standard. The standard tires were 6.70 - 15/4PR and the "Maximum" was 7-17.5/6PR. I have no i

A good cruising RPM for a 350 is around 3000, a 28 in tire [9.50 x 15] with 3.38 gear with a 1:1 trans is around 2900 at 70 MPH. I prefer the 3.56 for all around performance and gas mileage. Lee -- O

I'm not too hip on all this stuff ... all I know is I've got a Chevy 12 bolt rear with a 350/350 ... but when I'm cruising at 60-65 mph I'm only turning 2000 rpm -- I *like* that! =o) Alan http://Ala

The 3:38 is an after market gear set that fits the original rear end carrier sold my most vendors. After you factor in replacing all the bearings, it becomes a very costly project. Maybe 600 or so to

You are absolutely right Wayne, all of these gear ratios and others were standard in Pre-metric [1982] 10 &12 bolt GM cars. These can be still found in many wrecking yards thru-out US and Canada. Anot
