I would say the most likely problem is in the clutch disc. Either it's installed backwards (Real easy to do), or it's binding on the input shaft. When you pull the tranny out it should slide out eas

Double or triple the clutch free play before you do major surgery. Define free play as only return spring resistance. How about removing return spring and adjusting pedal so it drops 2" from its own
