Yikes -- that has to be the most round about fix for a faulty ignition switched ever devised. Other than that, what is the condition of the wiring? What you described would seem to be easily repaired

Red, Yes, you can do it! The key is to mark EVERY connection as you remove the old harness. You can't completely rely on the wiring diagrams, as there are often differences between them and reality.

I changed the harness on my TR-3 several years ago. Really no problem. Must admit that the car was stripped so I didn't have to contend with engines, seats, etc., in the way. The TR-3 harness is fair
