- You will be fine, I would go ahead and direct wire it, the head does not step down anything, the only thing it does do is create one aweful electrical contact. Your idea sounds like a winner. Patrick

- Most likely it does step down the voltage. It should be indicated somewhere on it. I have two portable CD players with car adaptors: one steps the voltage down to 9 volts and the other one steps it

- I direct wired a line in my spit as well. I took a fused line from what had been a CB radio. I then soldiered on a connector that fit perfectly in my CD from radio shack. I can easily pull it off and
