With it turning over but not cranking and backfiring, it sounds to me like timeing is off. You can get the #1 cylinder to Top Dead Center and pull the dist cap to make sure it is pointing at the cor

That was my problem a few months ago, backfiring out the exhaust. Make sure the spark plug wires are going to the right plugs. Didn't work to well for me with the 1 and 2 wires mixed up. Just a thoug
