The last time I ran into backfiring/afterfiring while under way at around half throttle it was caused by leaky valves that allowed combusting gases into the manifolds. This was on a '76 Dodge 360 V8.

There are two main sorts of backfires, caused by lean mix and rich mix. In general, the lean mix backfire occurs when the throttle is opened rapidly and the backfire is out the carburetor, like yours

I recently adjusted the carbs to richer and I finaly have no backfires anymore (especially in wintertime it was worse). Alos the engine seems to have more pull as well. Cheers, Hans

I sometimes also get backfire through the rear carb but only when cold starting (79B converted to HIF's and foam filters). This would pop off the damper. As Paul has suggested, I thought it was due
