I use a pickle fork and a 10 pound sledge hammer to get the front end apart. You have to really whack the pickle fork but it eventually pops loose. I've also hammered the threaded end of a balljoint

On the lower BJs smack the bottom metal plate to tighten them up. One the upper BJs just screw them down a bit tighter. I've used a screw type BJ/tie rod remover also with great results. I bought it
