I went through this twice last year. My problem was cracks in the float causing it to fill with gas. Dirt will also cause the same symptoms. Your float is not blocking the fuel coming in. Because of

The float might be sunk (full of gas from a pinhole), the valve might be stuck, etc. etc. Pull the bowl apart and the answer should be pretty evident. Best--Michael

I would agree with the statement that carb leaks from the needle sticking are a common feature on SU carbed cars, I struggled with the problem for years when I drove the cars as daily drivers. In the
