Does anyone know if it's possible to order replacement springs for the centrifugal weights inside Lucas distributors? When I opened mine up, there were two different springs. I would think they'd be

Oddly enough, my experience, backed by the best mechanic I know, is that the springs are indeed different. Anyone out there know otherwise? YMMV, my experience is limited to my cars... sf Stan Ficke

Two different springs are used so that the advance "curve" more closely resemles just that a curve. If two identical springs were used the curve would be linear. With two different springs, the curve

eh? Yes the springs are indeed two different lengths, I don't know of any source for these springs but I'd check round for distributor distributors and see if they do. I'll bet Joe Curto would know.

They don't have to be the same. In fact, after a lighter spring is installed to bring in the advance quicker, the centrifugal system may begin to bounce at high rpm. The 'fix' for this is to put one

Yes they are different. The reason is the advance curve "jumps out" at low RPM using the weeker spring then flatins out using the stronger spring. DEG RPM The reason for this is that the engine need

My TD has this big spring, small spring deal. But I don't understand how it works. Is the small spring supposed to be shorter than the big one, so that the small spring stretches out before the slack

Can the distributer Vacum Advance be disconected, and then advance the timing to make the system work without changing springs? Oh, questions, how deeps the river dad? Chet

Robert J Donahue: Yes the eye in the stronger spring should be oval and allow the shorter spring to take up the slack As long as the two weights are the same (I've nevere seen two different ones in t
