When l worked in the LUCAS garage in Birmingham England in the late late 40's and early 50's we used to get cars in that period and prewar cars that the head light reflectors had become dull with age

You may want to try a plater of mirrors that are used in homemade reflector telescopes, too. Look on the Web for that. Folks who ground their own mirrors always plate them on the top (first surface).
