Hi folks! Well, I've got a new fun one for you... I have a 1979 MGB (FYI). The following is a bit tough to describe, but I'll do my best. The car "stalls" randomly once at running temperature. By ran

Had the same problem with my 79B and also thought it was the fuel pump. Bought a new one and the problem still occurred. One day, when fiddling under the hood (which is just about every day I drive t

Have you ever noticed that rally tires on bad roads can be rather loud? Of course I listened to the engine, silly boy. :) When one pushes on the gas pedal and nothing happens, it generally gives me

Sounds like your tachometer is ceasing to function. Don't you listen for the engine before trying to restart it? An MG whose engine cannot be heard running is a new one on me. Ray Gibbons Dept. of Mo

One alternative reason for "sort of runs no throttle then dies" can be a sticky piston in the carburetor. Found that problem in my 60 Healey; after chasing up everything else, we pulled the carbs apa

Thanks for your response. I have one further question, if you don't mind. You mentioned the ignition system is probably the source of my worries, but not really what to look for. Is there a way of p

I think before any of us can guess what might do this, we need to know exactly what happened. You are driving down the road and suddenly power disappears at which point the tach drops to zero--right?

I'd pull the fuel line from carb and place in gas can then turn key to on position (not start) and let it pump a little and see if it flows well. This sounds like how one of mine behaved with an inte

No tach and no go, eh? Eeeeelectrical problem. The tach is tied to the coil, so a death of both engine and tach sure sounds like a problem with the spark, not the fuel. Is it only the engine and tach

I am going to take a Wild Assed Guess. One scenario seems consistent with everything except the grinding of the starter that led you to believe the engine was still running. If you have an intermitta

I'm with Jay on this one. You've got a fire side problem, not a fuel side one, I think. Ignition relay is a real good bet. As a backup, I'd have a look at your condensor unit (if you have points ins

Lots deleted. The first thing to do is to establish whether it is an ignition or fuel problem. If the engine kind of fades out when it dies it is probably fuel, if it dies instantaneously, it's proba

Electric tach, right? Ignition problem. Or the tach could be shorting to ground. You could try running with the tach disconnected. The engine is not running, but is still turning, because until you p

My vote is with Jay and Corey. It sounds like the problem is too sudden to be fuel. Plus if it was a quick off and then on, it might explain the grinding starter. Fuel problems tend to be less abrupt
