Sounds like a clog to me. It could be in the fuel pickup in the tank, the screens in the fuel pump, or the screens in the carb intake lines. Do you have a fuel filter in line somewhere? Less likely

The fuel pump will continue to click even if there is no fuel in the lines. THe next time it happens , you can check for fuel delivery at the carbs by removing one of the fuel lines and have someone
