I hope I am doing something wrong or I have 7 dead generators. I thought if I spun it with an impact wrench I would get some volts out of the back of it. 4 of them showed almost a whole volt, 3 of th

Frank, my '63 has the gen light come on in the gauge at idle (~1000 rpm) and goes off once under way - your impact wrench spinning greater that 1500 rpm? No sure but with the small pulley on the gen

I think that you need some kind of a load on the generator in order to develop current in the field coils. Try hooking them up across a headlamp and see if that makes any difference. Hal I hope I am

Frank, I think you need a draw on the genny to make volts.... Also a genny that has been sitting for a long time may need to be "polarized" to produce volts. Remember "flicking" the positive wire fro

Tie the two terminals on the generator together, put test leads on the junction of the two terminals and the other on the case. Then spin it, a good one will give you about 20-25 volts. Mark Nashvil

Exactly Mark I think :) The generator requires voltage in the field windings to produce the magnetic field before it will generate. This is how the regulator regulates current, by switching the volta

The easiest way to check a generator that I've found is to put +12 volts to the terminal from the battery, ground to the case. It should turn like a motor, if it does it's most likely good. J 14-18?

I guess I have 7 dead generators. Bummer. No wonder I run alternators on all my LBCs. Thanks for all the tips. But I still ended up with 3 gennys that put out almost 1 volt. Not one will light a 12 v

I seem to have lost the replys I got the last time I was in generator test mode. I have a bunch or generators and none seem to charge. How do you bench test a generator? I can spin it. -- Frank Clari
