In a similar situation, I actually managed to remove the OD without the engine and tranny coming out -- but they practically might as well have. I was just trying to save the time and cost of renting

I recommend John Esposito at Quantum highly. he rebuilt the OD in my 67 BGT. You are not far from Monroe CT anyway. Loosing part of the clutch friction material is not a good thing. Hence your slugg
