I recall reading that Triumph began de-emphasizing the "Standard" designation at least as far back as the 1960's. When the name was adopted, "Standard" was generally understood to mean "The standard

This may have already been said, but according to the book "Triumph Sports Cars" by William Krause, the company was named "Standard" because when it first began (1903) all the parts used on their car
