The answer to your teacher is that you use "an" before a vowel. "M" like in MG is spelled" em", not" m" and thus starts with a vowel. The M is the sign of the letter. Mike

The rule is if a word starts with a vowel then it is preceded by 'an' - if it starts with a consonant then it is preceded by and 'a'. Technically, the issue is that MG is an acronym for Morris Garag

If you are pronouncing the "M" (as in Morris) which starts with a = consonant sound, it calls for 'a' If you are naming the letter "M" (as = in MG) which starts with a vowel sound (em?) it calls for
