I think I will send away for a build certificate, this should clear up any issues with the serial number and engine. I looked for a MGA for a long time but did not check the VIN when I purchased this

I just looked in an old issure of MGA! regarding body numbers versis chassis numbers. The material was put together by Bill Gallihugh of NAMGAR. Body numbers 55000-60999 were fitted to MGA 1500's VIN

That is correct. Back then it was up to the dealer to tell the DMV what year the car was. Hence why I have seen some MK IIs' that are titled as '61s'.
