Check your valve timing. If it's also off, then the timing chain has slipped a tooth or the key to the crankshaft is sheared (or missing). Randall

Another possibility might be a sheared pin that locates the dog on the end of the distributor. Not likely IMO, but worth a check if the valve timing seems OK. Other possibilities include a broken or

I had that happen on a Chevy 305 once. The cause was that the centrifugal advance mechanism had frozen. Stuck solid. We re-timed it enough to make it home (to Boston from Owensboro, KY) but it wasn't
