Dear All, My odometer tells me that I have travelled about 91.1 miles for every hundred miles I drive. The speedometer/odometer in question is a Smiths unit, with the "1000" figure on the face, which

Hi Mike, The overall drive ratio is a function of the final drive, ie, the differential assembly (though the differential component within actually has no bearing on the drive ratio, I digress). All

Hi Bill, This is the only 1500 I have ever driven, and the gearbox was changed within weeks of an engine strip-down/rebuild. It may be that I do have very poor acceleration, but I just don't realise

I might be worth the effort to pull the odometer gear from the transmission and count the teeth. Perhaps your replacement box came from a Marina or Midget 1500...or a Spitfire specified for export. C

In a word - no. I don't think John's on this list, though he's a regular on the spitfire-enthusiast yahoo group and (as you know) the Herald group. This would make me even more confident that the fau

Splendid - that rules that possibility out, then. Thanks for that. I unsubscribed from the spitfire-enthusiast group some time ago, and the question would be off-topic on the Herald group, so I'll dr

All things are possible. And it looks as though the speedo/odo drive gear may well be wrong. How do I get it out? If this is going to take me five hours on my back with gear oil dripping up my nose,

Hi Mike, That's not exactly what I said. It is possible to have a complete GT6 gearset in there - there are companies which specialise in fitting close ratio gear sets, it's just not a simple matter

Thanks for the explanation, Bill. I can rule out the gearbox altogether then. As far as this problem is concerned, I now know that I don't actually need to check this any more. I do need to check the

How is this true? It seems to me that a gearbox out of a GT6 would be assuming a different final driveratio and therefore a different speed at any given rpm even in direct 4th. One of the American c

You seem to be suggesting (correct me if I got this wrong) that you are getting an accurate speed reading but an inaccurate odometer reading - so the gauge is disagreeing with itself? But, as you th

Dear Richard, Yes, but this is because I have freaked the speedo readings by moving the needle up by about 9 mph. Taking road speed readings from the rev counter (rpm x 0.018), and comparing them to
