Ken--Go with the spark plug brand that gave you the original 16,000 miles. If you can no longer read it after 25 years, it's probably the Champion 12NYC. Add an "R" to this for radio static control.

I have a 74 (Nov 73 production cf14770) It has a paint code 73 as well. I found this number on the net somewhere..don't remember where.. that it was maple. seems to be two numbers for the same colour

I use the Champions. However, spec plugs for the 75 and 76 is the Champion RN9YC, not the RN12YC. The proper plug is a bit shorter inside the cylinder than the RN12YC. Eric '76 TR6 (CF52678U +O) My 7

Eric--I wonder why it is, that the late model head with its lower compression would call for the colder (N9) plug? This is the plug that caused premature fouling in some of the early seventies engine

I'll take a guess and suggest that this is related to the retarded timing settings for the later cars. I know the 74 had the timing set to 4 ATDC at idle... and this makes the whole motor run hotter.

As for the source that recommends this plug, it is the Bentley Manual and Owners manual. I'm not sure whether it is a colder or hotter plug. I just know that it has a shorter tip. During my last tune
