Back firing is generally an indication of a lean fuel mixture. This could be the fuel mixture of the SU carbs or possibly an intake vacuum leak. Try enriching the carbs a little at a time and see if

Sounds like flooding to me. When you back off of the throttle quickly, the engine gulps fuel and spits it out the exhaust. Try looking at the float levels in the float bowls. Timing can play a part,
