I found that once you get the end started, you can work the trim side to side while exerting downward pressure and the gap is spread sufficiently to accept the trim. And hindsight being what it is,

I take it your having the same problem I am. I am told that the two ends of the short strip are to slip on to either side of the chrome piece. Of course that impossible inthat the piece is to short,
