That makes it easy to attach and detach the filter but fishing the filter out is still a pain. I've seen that done and it is certainly easy but I'm with you and the spin-on adapter is the way to go.

My car has the similar hole in the fender. It is a very clean job. Also as I understand it many BL dealers added this hole for ease of changing the filter. aaron
