Yes, contamination can happen if you aren't careful. Those folks with the philosophy "If a little is good, more is better, and too much is just enough" would get in trouble with Loctite or with tape

I used teflon tape for years, but a few years back changed to "brush-on" teflon sealant because it is quicker & easier. I have had good luck with it, but have not used it in a production environment
