Just to throw water on the simmering missives: Talk about speaking at cross purposes. Break out the Mechanical Engineering textbooks, and lets all talk the same issue. We have owners, who are knowled

Yup, horsepower is a derived parameter. I think generally hp means the rate at which torque is doing work, like ft-lb per second or minute. Or is that lb-feet / sec ? I don't know..it is so hard to b

It's not so much that the horsepower itself is derived... it's just that we can't directly measure horspower and we can easily measure torque, so we're left to calculate the HP. What we generally cal

I seem to be overly prolific tonight for no particular reason. It all boils down to the compromises you want to make for your favorite application. Those that really want to run open track events are

I can't understand why anyone would want an effective 5th gear ratio which would spin the motor over 2000-2500rpm at 70mph. 5th should be a deep overdrive, IMHO. You do all of your racing, obviously

YES Mike, you are right on. 1950rpm at 70 with the wide ratio T-5 and 2.88 gears. Works GREAT for me. And the 5.0L with stock cam is really enough for my street use. Gary -- Original message --

I will second that motion. My Brand X car has a Tremec TKO600 with a 0.64 5th gear and travels the freeways at 70 mph at about 2,100 rpm and pulls hard in 5th. The greatest single mod that anyone can

Your probably right... I have found as I get older (and older) that much of what in theory is the optimal performance setup offers limited real benefit compared to the compromised real world use. I
