Since we were going over the rebuilding of trannys... Since shortly after I had the tranny in Tintin ('66 MGB-GT) rebuilt, it sometimes balks at going into second gear. No grind, it just won't go in.

These 3-synchro boxes used brass synchro rings (early) and steel ones (later). The gears are interchangeable, just to complicate the situation. It sounds as though you have a mis-matched synchro/gea

but... it seems to me you could use steel rings on an early gear but not the reverse. It would be nice to be able to use the steel rings when rebuilding for endurance purposes. I think steel on steel

Lawrie, correct me if I'm wrong, but only the second gear baulk is available in steel (3-synchro tranny), and a steel ring cannot be fitted to gear designed for the brass ring. If you have the stock

Gregg, all the literature says not to use the wrong parts together. As Barney elsewhere commented, steel-on-steel would likely not be good for wear, and brass on the rough, black surface surely would
