My money is on a vacuum leak. While the car id running, spray carb cleaner at the bottom of the carb. where the intake manifold meets the head, or anyplace where the intake can either be taken apart

I concur with the suggestion that it's a vacuum leak or possibly carburetion (not a valve problem). Agree compression sounds OK. But what vehicle is this, anyway? An MGB should have a valve clearance
